How to own your market position on Curaçao.

On a small island, everyone knows everyone. Businesses have been here for decades. Reputations travel fast and word of mouth is still one of the most powerful growth drivers on Curaçao.

And yet, a lot of good businesses struggle to be the first name that comes up when a potential customer needs what they offer. Not because they're not good. Because they haven't made it easy for people to place them.

That's a positioning problem. And it's fixable.

What market position actually means

Your market position is the specific space your business occupies in your customer's mind. Not what you say about yourself in your bio. Not your tagline. What they actually think of when your name comes up, or what makes them think of your name when they need something.

When someone on Curaçao needs a place to stay for a special occasion, which hotel comes to mind first? When they're looking for a property manager for their vacation rental, whose name do they say? When they want a table at a restaurant where the food is actually worth talking about, where do they go?

If the answer isn't you, you have a positioning opportunity.

"Being the best" is not a position

Ask almost any business owner what makes them different and the answer sounds like some version of this: great quality, personal service, years of experience, we really care about our clients.

Those things might all be true. But they are not a position. They're what every serious business says. They answer the question "are you worth considering?" but they don't answer the more important question: "why you specifically, over everyone else?"

A real position is specific. It answers: the best for what, and for whom.

A position is not what you say about yourself. It's the one sentence your best customers use to describe you when you're not in the room.

What a real position looks like

Here are some examples of what ownable positions look like in practice, for the kinds of businesses we work with on Curaçao:

See the difference? Each of those is specific. Each of them is for a particular person with a particular need. Each of them is ownable and memorable.

Why it matters more on a small island

Curaçao has a concentrated market. The pool of potential customers is smaller than in a big city, which means every referral counts more. People recommend businesses they can describe easily. If your position is clear, you become the name that comes up. If it isn't, you get left out of conversations you didn't even know were happening.

Clear positioning also makes your marketing easier and cheaper. When you know exactly who you're talking to and what you're saying, you stop wasting budget on content that doesn't connect. Every post, every ad, every email has a job to do.

How to find your position

Start with three questions:

Where those three answers overlap is your position. It won't come from a brainstorm. It comes from honest reflection on your business and your customers, which is harder and more valuable than any logo refresh.

Then what

Once your position is clear, everything else aligns. Your message becomes consistent across every channel. Your content has direction instead of just filling space. Your campaigns have a point. Your social media stops being a chore and starts building something that actually grows your business on Curaçao.

Position first. Then everything else.

This is where we start with every business we work with at FUNkiness! We get the position right before we produce a single piece of content. Because content without positioning is just noise, and noise doesn't grow businesses.
