Someone on your target market is standing in an airport lounge right now, typing "best boutique hotel Curaçao" into ChatGPT instead of Google. Or asking Perplexity to compare three vacation rentals for them. Or googling a question that Google itself answers on the spot, with an AI Overview, before they ever see a website link.
None of that is a maybe anymore. It's already how a growing share of your future customers search. The question isn't whether this is happening. It's whether your business shows up when it does.
Search stopped being just a list of links
For twenty years, showing up on Google meant one thing: rank high enough that someone clicks your link. That's still true, but it's no longer the whole picture. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's own AI Overviews now read the internet, pick the best answer to a question, and hand it straight to the person searching. Sometimes with a link. Often without one.
Ahrefs analyzed hundreds of thousands of search terms and found that when an AI Overview appears above the results, the top-ranking page gets up to 58% fewer clicks. That's not a small dip. That's half your potential website traffic disappearing into an AI-generated summary you were never mentioned in.
What AI search actually looks for
Here's the part that matters: AI doesn't read your website the way a person does. It's not impressed by a beautiful homepage or a clever tagline. It's scanning for one thing, a clear, specific answer to a real question. If your website only talks about itself in general terms, AI has nothing to quote. If it answers actual questions people ask, AI has exactly what it needs, and a reason to mention you.
Question: "What's the best time of year to visit Curaçao for diving?"
Answer: "Curaçao's dive season runs year-round thanks to water outside the hurricane belt, but visibility peaks from April to September when the trade winds calm the surface."
That's the format. Short, specific, useful on its own without needing the rest of the page for context. A business whose website is full of answers like that gets picked up. A business whose website only says "we offer the best service on the island" doesn't, because there's nothing there an AI can actually quote.
Why this is a bigger opportunity here than most places
Marketing on Curaçao is still mostly built for 2015. Most local businesses haven't touched this yet, not because it's hard, but because barely anyone here is talking about it. That's not a warning. That's an open lane. The businesses that write real answers to real questions now are the ones AI will keep quoting later, while everyone else is still arguing about which filter looks best on Instagram.
What to actually do about it
Three things, none of which require a developer or a redesign.
Answer the questions people actually ask. Not "About Us" copy. Real questions your customers type into Google before they've heard of you: what does it cost, how does it work, what should I know before I book. Write the question, then the answer, short and direct.
Make it easy for machines to read, not just people. There's a technical layer to this called structured data, basically a translation layer that tells Google and AI exactly what your content means. You don't need to understand the code. You need someone who does to set it up once, properly.
Show your work. Real numbers, real specifics, real experience, not vague claims. AI is built to favor content that sounds like it comes from someone who actually knows what they're talking about, because it usually does.
